On June 17, 2023, the East African Parents Association took a significant step towards addressing mental health within our community by hosting an insightful and impactful workshop. The event was a resounding success, bringing together parents, mental health professionals, and community leaders to discuss the often-overlooked topic of mental well-being.

The Importance of Mental Health

Mental health is a crucial aspect of overall well-being, yet it is often shrouded in stigma and misconceptions, especially within the East African community. Recognizing this, our association aimed to create a safe and supportive environment where parents could openly discuss mental health issues, learn from experts, and share their experiences.

Interactive Sessions

Following the keynote, attendees participated in interactive breakout sessions. These sessions covered various topics, including:

      1. Recognizing Signs of Mental Health Issues: Led by clinical psychologist Dr. John Ouma, this session focused on identifying early signs of mental health struggles in children and adults.
      2. Coping Strategies and Self-Care: Facilitated by licensed therapist Sarah Ahmed, participants learned practical strategies for managing stress and promoting self-care within their families.
      3. Breaking the Stigma: This open discussion, moderated by community leader Tsige Kibret, allowed parents to share their experiences and challenges related to mental health, fostering a sense of solidarity and understanding.

    Panel Discussion

One of the highlights of the workshop was a panel discussion featuring mental health professionals, educators, and community leaders. The panelists addressed questions from the audience, offering insights into the cultural nuances of mental health and how to navigate them effectively. The discussion emphasized the need for culturally sensitive approaches to mental health care and the role of community support in fostering well-being.

    Community Engagement

The workshop also provided a platform for local mental health organizations to showcase their services. Information booths were set up, offering resources and support for families seeking help. This initiative aimed to bridge the gap between the community and available mental health services, making it easier for parents to access the support they need.

    Moving Forward

The positive feedback from attendees underscored the success of the workshop. Parents left feeling more informed and empowered to address mental health issues within their families. The East African Parents Association is committed to continuing this important conversation and plans to organize more events focused on mental health and well-being.

    A Call to Action

We encourage all members of our community to prioritize mental health and seek support when needed. By working together, we can break the stigma surrounding mental health and create a healthier, more supportive environment for our families.

The East African Parents Association would like to thank everyone who participated in and supported this event. Together, we are making a difference.
